I can soooo much relate to "making the decision not to do transcription" even after it took me 3 years to get an associates degree going to school part time while working full time, and still owing a $3,000 student loan. After graduation I felt I couldn't do this job, so I applied for different medical jobs. 5 years and two children later, I realize that if I had just kept at it I would probably be where I need to be by now with my typing speed and experience.
